How To Start Investing

I’ve been doing a lot of research on how to start investing as it’s become relevant to me recently.  Getting out of debt was a focus for a long time, but now I’ve found myself with a fair amount of money in my bank account and interest rates are HORRIBLE right now.

I don’t really understand how I’m supposed to beat the stock market.  Paid money managers can’t do it.  Why shouldn’t I just buy an index fund?  (At least now that I understand what they are thanks to that website).  Is there any point in trying to beat the market?
